The tides that govern our oceans are complex natural phenomena.
While it may not be easy to explain the intricate forces behind tides, it is
possible to acquaint children with tide-related vocabulary and tidal causes and
effects. Here are some of the basics:
 |
High tide and low tide refer to the rise and fall of the
ocean waters. |
 |
Tides are caused by gravitational pull between Earth, sun
and moon. |
 |
Spring tides are caused when a full or new moon lines up in
a straight path with Earth and sun. Spring tides occur twice a month all
year long. |
 |
Neap tides are caused when sun, Earth and moon line up to
create a right angle. As the sun and moon each try to pull in opposite
directions at the water, they create a rather weak tide with little
difference between high and low tides levels. |
