St. Monica School has only Kindergarten and Grade 1 classes, so we had the flexibility and support from our colleagues to transform the gym into a seaside play area. We brought the houses from the 3 kindergarten classes, so they became the cabins by the shore and places for the fish-frys. We brought the water tables and sea creatures for water play. The sand tables were rolled in, so we had wet sand and dry sand play with shells, shovels, and pails. There was a reading corner filled with fiction and non-fiction books about the sea and children could lay on the blankets on the mats and relax in the "sun". The pier that we set up for fishing was a big hit with everyone! In addition, we had a games table, an art centre and a puzzle corner. The teachers arranged a schedule for bringing their class in for an hour to experience the ocean, and occasionally, we shared the space with 2 classes in at the same time.
