Purpose:
to make our own version of "Down by the Bay"
Procedure:
After singing/reading "Down by the Bay" by Raffi have the children
brainstorm for creatures that live in the ocean. I like to have a list 3-4
animals more than the students. -We drew
names to decide who would get to what animals. -The students had to think of a word that rhymed with their animal and what that animal could do with the rhyming word (e.g.. Did you ever see a crab riding in a cab?)
-They
folded their page by a third, wrote the chorus on the front and typed their
sentence in and pasted it inside the fold (see pictures) -Using
the collage method they illustrated their picture and made their animal on the manila
paper (coloring their animal). -They made their animal into a pop-up by adding a stick to the animal and a hole to the bottom of the page so that the animal can pop up as we are singing the song.
-A
songbook was compiled of all the children's verses. We also replaced 'mother'
with the person's name. The children had a great deal of fun sharing their verse with others.
