Rainbow Fish

Rainbow Fish Activities

Throughout the Sea unit I read all of the Rainbow fish stories. Rainbow Fish, Rainbow Fish to the Rescue and Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale all by Marcus Pfister. The children are familiar with this author because we had just finished reading all the Hopper stories in the spring by Marcus Pfister.

Puppets

Materials

Rainbow Fish stories
Rainbow Fish puppet (You can make a rainbow fish puppet with blue felt that is cut in a fish shape and sewn together leaving a small opening for your hand or fingers. You can decorate the puppet with fabric paint or glitter glue. You could also attach the glittery scales with Velcro and place Velcro on the other sea creatures so that rainbow fish can share his beautiful scales with all of his friends.
Other Sea Creature puppets

With this activity we role-play the story of the rainbow fish using the puppets. The children tell their own story using the puppets as characters in their story.

As an extension you could write out the stories that the children make up and make class books, the children could also illustrate the pages.

Rainbow Fish Craft

Materials

Colorful tissue paper cut into squares
A fish outline photocopied. The children could also draw their own outline of a fish.
A glittery scale, you could use sequins.
Liquid starch or watered down glue.
Paint brushes.
Felts and scissors

Activity

1.   The children draw the face of the fish and color it in.

2.   The children take the paint brush dip into the liquid starch and paint the tissue paper on. They can overlap the squares to make a scaly look.

3.   After they have covered the entire fish, let the fish dry overnight.

4.   Once dry they can choose a glittery scale and give it to a friend so that they can share like Rainbow Fish. Once they have received their scale they glue it on their fish.

5.   Finally they cut out their fish.
