Puppets

I use puppets for a variety of activities.

For children to explore with at choice time.
To role play a story
To sing songs
To act out a math equation
To create stories and explore with language
To retell stories

In this activity for Who eats What?,

In the song, Five Little Ducks by Raffi, The mother duck is a puppet and all of the baby ducks are Velcroed onto the mother duck. The activity we do this puppet is subtraction. Mother duck started with 5 ducks and 1 duck swam away, how many are left?

We role-play this activity in large groups; small groups and the children role-play during their choice time as well.

An extension to this activity is journal writing; to draw a subtraction sentence.

In the song Octopus by Charlotte Diamond, I use crocheted puppets to role-play the food chain again. This is definitely one of my favourite puppets. The slippery fish gets eaten by the octopus that gets eaten by the tuna fish that gets eaten by the great white shark, which finally gets eaten by the humungous whale. All of the puppets fit into each other’s mouth, so they really do get eaten. I bought these puppets from Kids in Harmony, a company in Red Deer.
