These
problems correspond to the Math Program of studies for Grade One. We have used
"sea scenarios" to present each of the problems. They include
geometry, measurement, operations, probability, patterning, and numeration.
We
chose to display these problems on a bulletin board. Each child was given a
sheet of drawing paper, which they folded 4 inches from the bottom. A piece of
blue construction paper was pasted over this fold and glued on top of the
fold. The children took scissors and waved the top to look like ocean waves.
Each child was given a problem, which was pasted near the top of the drawing
paper. Under the problem, the children solved it by drawing a picture or using a
number sentence. When hung on a bulletin board, the folded part would be
paper-clipped together so that the answer would be revealed only when it was
unclipped.
