This is a collection of poems that my grade one class has composed. Each child did a "Home Research" project on a different whale or shark. They each wrote a poem, using some of the facts that they had researched to assist in the composition. A challenging, but a very rewarding learning activity! The children loved sharing their poems with each other!
Pygmy
Whale By: Maria I
am a pygmy whale. I
move my tail up and down. I
have white lips and a patch of white. I'm
black and white, not brown. Fish
and octopus and squid, Are
my favorite foods. When I eat a lot of fish, It puts me in a very good mood! Blue
Whale By: Michael Day I
am the blue whale. The
biggest animal who lives in the sea. I can dive for half an hour. Then
I come up to the surface to breathe. I
eat four million krill a day. My
whistle is louder than a jet. I'm
the biggest animal that has ever lived. Would

am a whale shark. I
might look like I'm fat, But
that's just not true. I
might look like I have no teeth, But
I do! I'm
the biggest shark there is. Over

like to swim near the equator, Near

love to eat krill. I
got my name from the Pollack fish. People
should leave me alone, That

am a killer whale. I
enjoy living in water that is cold. I
am black and white. My
baby is what I love to hold. I
have 100 teeth. I
breathe through a blowhole. I
love to eat small whales, And
spit their bones out into a bowl. Blue

never blink my eye. My
back is blue, my belly white. I
swim so fast I almost fly. Fish
is my favorite food. And
because I am so fast, Most
fish cannot get away from me, As

swim in tropical waters. I
would rather eat a turtle, Than
some plump and juicy sea otters! I
do not have any enemies. I
like to be left alone. I
have very sharp teeth. If
you bother me, I

have a sixth sense to detect sea animals. Bigger
sharks like to eat me. I
am 6.1 metres long. When

you seen the movie Jaws? That

have two blowholes. I
can open my mouth three metres wide. Man
is my only enemy, So

am gently and friendly with humans. I
like to catch balls and sticks! I
like to swim in warm waters. I
use my flippers to steer. I
can swallow a fish whole. I

hide in kelp and hate killer whales. Plankton

travel from Alaska to Mexico. I
