Poems

This is a collection of poems that my grade one class has composed.  Each child did a "Home Research" project on a different whale or shark.  They each wrote a poem, using some of the facts that they had researched to assist in the composition.  A challenging, but a very rewarding learning activity!  The children loved sharing their poems with each other!

Pygmy Whale   By: Maria

I am a pygmy whale.

I move my tail up and down.

I have white lips and a patch of white.

I'm black and white, not brown.

Fish and octopus and squid,

Are my favorite foods.

When I eat a lot of fish,

It puts me in a very good mood!

Blue Whale   By: Michael Day

I am the blue whale.

The biggest animal who lives in the sea.

I can dive for half an hour.

Then I come up to the surface to breathe.

I eat four million krill a day.

My whistle is louder than a jet.

I'm the biggest animal that has ever lived.

Would you like me for a pet?

Whale Shark By: Evan Hole

I am a whale shark.

I might look like I'm fat,

But that's just not true.

I might look like I have no teeth,

But I do!

I'm the biggest shark there is.

Over 12 500 kilograms I weigh.

I like to swim near the equator,

Near the surface of warm water bays.

Basking Shark By: Kristen Allen

I am a basking shark.

I can be brown, black or blue.

If you come to Scotland,

I will show my six rows of teeth to you!

When I go to look for food,

I catch it with my gills.

Sometimes I eat the eggs of fish.

They look like little pills!

Sei Whale By: Kaitlin Tumbach

I am grayish black.

I live in the ocean,

Not in a shack.

I love to eat krill.

I got my name from the Pollack fish.

People should leave me alone,

That is what I wish.

Killer whale

I am a killer whale.

I enjoy living in water that is cold.

I am black and white.

My baby is what I love to hold.

I have 100 teeth.

I breathe through a blowhole.

I love to eat small whales,

And spit their bones out into a bowl.

Blue Shark  By: Nicole

I am a blue shark.

I never blink my eye.

My back is blue, my belly white.

I swim so fast I almost fly.

Fish is my favorite food.

And because I am so fast,

Most fish cannot get away from me,

As they go swimming past.

Tiger Shark By: Saad Haqqi

I am a Tiger Shark.

I swim in tropical waters.

I would rather eat a turtle,

Than some plump and juicy sea otters!

I do not have any enemies.

I like to be left alone.

I have very sharp teeth.

If you bother me,

I will eat you like an ice-cream cone!

Hammerhead Shark  By: Dustin Smith

I am a Hammerhead Shark.

I love eating squid.

My head is shaped like a hammer,

Almost as though it had been smashed by a lid!

I have a sixth sense to detect sea animals.

Bigger sharks like to eat me.

I am 6.1 metres long.

When I am cold I like to drink hot tea.

Humpback Whale By: Jeffrey Gleason

I am a humpback whale.

I have many baleen plates.

Acrobats are what I am great at.

It is all humans that I hate!

I am a very gentle whale,

But I am hunted just for fun.

I am scared of boats on the water.

Using my fins, I try to run.

Beluga Whale  By: Kristen Visser

I am the Beluga Whale.

I am called the canary of the sea.

I'm all white with tiny black eyes.

And I am friendly to everybody!

I am not a very fast swimmer.

I have a round blunt head.

I make the cold Arctic Ocean,

My safe and snuggly waterbed.

Narwhal Whale By: Kalina Broda

I am a Narwhal.

I have a spiraling tusk, as you can see.

My enemy is the killer whale.

I like hiding in the deep blue sea!

I am a very, very good singer.

I live in the Arctic waters.

I have to be careful of the Inuit.

I like swimming with the otters!

Right Whale By: Katrina Labonte

I am a right whale.

Sometimes I have lice on my back.

I slam myself against the water.

I love eating shrimp for a snack!

I move very slow like a turtle,

So hunters found me easy to kill.

So now I'm an endangered species,

And that gives me a great big thrill!

Mako Shark By: Daniel Puzio

I am a mako shark.

I am known to attack white boats.

I like to eat tuna fish.

I would never eat white goats!

I give birth to live young.

Man is my only enemy here.

But I can swim fast,

So do not shed a tear!

Manatee By: Sean Ritter

I am a manatee.

I like to eat water plants.

I swim in shallow rivers.

And I don't like to eat ants!

I am a gentle mammal.

I have hair that forms my coat.

I have no natural enemies,

Only propellers of motorboats!

Great White Shark By: Scott

I am a great white shark.

I have 3 000 teeth in my mouth.

I like to swim in tropical waters.

I like to swim in the south!

Have you seen the movie Jaws?

That horrible shark was me!

An eating machine, a fearless fish,

Who swims in the deep blue sea!

Bowhead Whale By: Natalia

I am a bowhead whale.

I have fins not feet.

I am a mammal.

Krill is what I like to eat!

I have two blowholes.

I can open my mouth three metres wide.

Man is my only enemy,

So from humans I must hide.

Bottlenose Dolphin By: Victoria Saccomani

I am a bottlenose dolphin.

I communicate by clicks.

I am gently and friendly with humans.

I like to catch balls and sticks!

I like to swim in warm waters.

I use my flippers to steer.

I can swallow a fish whole.

I can live up to 40 years!

Gray Whale By: Brendan DeForge

I am a gray whale.

I live in the Pacific Ocean.

I am gray like metal.

I like to eat plankton potion!

I hide in kelp and hate killer whales.

Plankton is what I like to eat.

I travel from Alaska to Mexico.

I use my flippers, not feet!

Nurse Shark By: Sarah Bigam

I am the nurse shark.

I get my name from sucking.

I sound like a nursing baby.

I do not really like ducking!

But I am still a fish,

I live at the bottom of the sea.

I swim in tropical waters,

Warm water is just for me!

Common Porpoise By: Kelsie

I am a common porpoise.

I am very shy.

I am not a dolphin.

I do not like it when my skin is dry!

My enemy is the killer whale,

Great white sharks are a threat,

But man is my greatest fear,

Because of pollution and nets.

Sperm Whale By: Elliot Lee

I am the sperm whale.

My skin is blue.

I like to eat fish.

But I won't eat you!

I can hold my breath,

For an hour.

I live in all oceans.

And I am as long as a tower!
