Clay Fish

We made clay fish.

An artist in residence, Patti Holowaychuk came to make clay fish with the children.

The children were given a block of moist clay.

They manipulated the clay with their hands and rolling pins to create a flat surface.

The children were then given a fish template to trace around to make the fish shape.

There were a variety of tools available for the children.

They used seashells to make scales and add texture to the fish. They used other tools to cut out fins, make stripes and to add any other details they desired to make their own  design.

After the fish were dry they were put in a kiln. They were then ready for painting. The children used liquid tempura paint and chose their colors. When the fish were dry, I applied a glaze to make them shiny. Finally I gave the children some glitter to finish off their creations.
